Youth Action Summer Camp

This camp was specifically designed for youth aged 13-18 residing in Minnesota, strongly emphasizing self-love, Latinx culture, and the connection to nature. Unidos MN primary goal was to provide a space where young individuals could reclaim their voices and tap into their own power.

At camp, youth participants engaged in various activities and discussions centered around important themes. We facilitated conversations about de(colonized) identities, embracing queerness, and cultivating self-love. Furthermore, we explored how systems of oppression operate through the lens of race, class, and gender. Empowering youth with knowledge, we also delved into community organizing and the ways in which young individuals can advocate for education and climate justice.

To create an authentic camp experience, I drew upon my own memories of camping. I aimed to make the environment cozy and simplistic, channeling the essence of being immersed in nature. Additionally, I developed an entire system for the camp, including a cohesive color scheme consisting of orange, cream beige, and brown. The concept of "less is more" guided our approach, and the youth responded positively to the thoughtful design choices.

In addition to thought-provoking conversations, our camp offered a range of engaging activities such as beadwork bracelet making, spoken word, and exciting outdoor adventures like canoeing, kayaking, and water volleyball. By combining elements of cultural expression, self-reflection, and enjoyment in nature, we aimed to create a transformative and memorable experience for the youth attendees.
